Colorectal Cancer Symptoms

By ememichael at 2010-08-31 06:58:00
colorectal cancer is the third commonest cancer diagnosed in the United States. Each year over 100,000 Americans are diagnosed with colon cancer and over 50 percent of these patients will die from colorectal cancer. Colon cancer incidence is not much different between males and females, however colon cancer is slightly more prevalent in women compared to men (ratio of 1.2:1) but the rectal cancer is more common in males (ratio of 1.7:1).

cancer prevention is action taken to lower the chance of getting cancer. Some cancer prevention trials are conducted with healthy people who have not had cancer but who have an increased risk for cancer.

It is thought that colorectal cancers take many years to develop, usually starting as a pre-cancerous polyp in the color or rectum. Because they tend to take such a long time to develop, there is time to detect the growths and remove them before they become troublesome. This is why colorectal cancer is a very preventable disease.

Symptoms of Colorectal Cancer:

1. Changes in bowel habits. This can manifest in constipation, diarrhoea, bowel incontinence, and feeling of unfinished bowel movement.

2. Production of narrower stools than normal.

3. Anemia. This is the shortage of red blood cells.

4. Abdominal discomforts. This may be manifested in feelings of discomforts, bloatedness, fullnes, cramps or pains in the abdomen.

5. Weight loss.

6. Fatigue or feeling of extreme tiredness.

The two other types of colorectal cancer treatment which are often used in addition to surgery are radiation therapy and chemotherapy. Both of these types of treatment are very aggressive, but they also have a really good rate of success making them a standard practice by doctors.

Eat vegetables like, cabbage, broccoli, water cress, white and red radishes, cauliflower and brussels sprouts. Your fruits should consist of apples, pears, strawberries, plum and tangrines. These are even better than bran.

Colorectal cancer is a form of cancer that develops in the colon or rectum. That's why it's often labeled as colon cancer. Colorectal cancer attacks men and women of all racial and ethnic groups, and is most often found in people aged 50 years or older. There is an explanation for the age factor of course, and it's probably quite obvious for all of you.

The most common treatment of colorectal cancer is surgery. Chemotherapy and radiotherapy are also popular treatments but they are advised according to the stage of the disease. Surgeries can also be classified in to various types, namely curative, bypass, palliative, open and close and fecal diversion.

Colorectal cancer can be cured in most cases, when it's diagnosed in early stages. It is the medical oncologists, gastroenterologists, radiation oncologists and surgeons, who specialize in treating such cancers in women.

Colorectal cancer is cancer of the colon or rectum and is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the World. In US, an estimated 146,970 people were diagnosed, and an estimated 49,920 people died from the disease in 2009. It is equally common in men and women.

Prevention

Some evidence suggests that low-fat and high-fiber diets may reduce your risk of colon cancer. Preventive Services Task Force recommends against taking aspirin or other anti-inflammatory medicines to prevent colon cancer if you have an average risk of the disease -- even if someone in your family has had the condition.

The rectum is the last several inches of the large intestine, right before the anus. This is where your body stores fecal matter before you release it. Additionally, the rectum packs the waste into a more solid form so that you can release your stool.

You can take vitamin supplements to replace what you are not getting in your diet, but this should be a last resort. It is always better to eat healthy and get your vitamins and minerals from real foods as they are far more effective. Of course on top of eating healthily you should also take regular exercise. I won't dwell on this as we all know already how important exercise is for our bodies in general, not just cancer prevention.

Cure for the cancer varies according to each severity case. Doctors usually use a combination of therapies that can include surgery, chemotherapy and radiation to successfully treat each specific case of colorectal cancer.
