Viral Meningitis Symptoms

By ememichael at 2010-08-30 06:36:20
Viral meningitis is the most common form. Usually viruses that enter your body through your mouth before going to your brain and multiplying cause it. You can find these viruses in the mucus, saliva and feces.

A viral infection headache can come from different types of viruses. The concern about having such headaches is that the root cause may be meningitis.

Straight away the doctors put me in for a brain scan. As I waited for the results the doctors told me it was one of three things: viral meningitis; bacterial meningitis or a brain hemorrhage.

Meningitis symptoms are typically characterized by bad headaches, stiff neck, tiredness, vomiting, fever , leg pain, dull skin tone and difficulty in consuming food and drinks.

1-Nausea and vomiting
2-Extreme sensitivity to light (photophobia)
3-Stiff neck
4-Head ache
5-Fever (may have sudden onset)

The bacteria are highly toxic. They attack the nasal tract and invade the bloodstream. Their main target is the brain. When they reach the blood-brain barrier, they destroy the defence system, enter the CSF and attack the brain cells. As the infection spreads, the fluid becomes pus-like, with white blood cells, proteins and extra fluid all trying to fight the infection.

Causes

The bacteria and virus that cause general illness can also caused meningitis. Sometimes the bacteria and viruses that infect the skin, urinary system, gastrointestinal or respiratory tract can spread by the bloodstream to the meningitis through cerebrospinal fluid, the fluid that circulates in and around the spinal cord.

The cerebrospinal fluid in bacterial meningitis is usually characterized by marked elevations in protein concentration, an very reduced glucose level, and, in the absence of previous antibiotic treatment, a positive Gram stain for bacteria.

Viral meningitis is the most common form. Usually viruses that enter your body through your mouth before going to your brain and multiplying cause it. You can find these viruses in the mucus, saliva and feces. Other viruses that may cause meningitis include: Chickenpox , Flu, Mumps, HIV ,Genital herpes.

Meningococcal meningitis is endemic in parts of Africa, India, and other developing nations. Bacterial meningitis is contagious, which means it can be passed to someone else by spit or snot. Symptoms in infants under 12 months include high fever, fretfulness, irritability - particularly when handled, difficulty awakening, drowsiness, difficulty feeding, and/or a stiff neck, or bulging fontanelle.

Viral meningitis is caused by enteroviruses, as the name implies. Highly infectious, the disease is spread easily through secretions of the nose and mouth. Three to seven days is the incubation period of the virus, starting with the infection through to the appearance of the first symptoms.

Different types of meningitis can be caused by many elements with a variety of symptoms, but one symptom that may or may not be present is that of meningitis rash. It is important to know what to watch for as this symptom could indicate the immediate need for treatment.

The treatment that you will receive for meningitis depends on the underlying cause of the condition. If it is viral meningitis you will usually only require symptom relief such as bed rest and increased fluid. Bacterial meningitis requires prompt intravenous (IV) and antibiotic treatment. These will prevent serious complications as well as neurological damage.

The next step in understanding these concepts is to analyze the first parts of the words. "Mening-" refers to the meninges which are the membranous coverings of the brain and spinal cord. So "meningitis" means inflammation or infection of these membranous coverings.

Meningitis is inflammation of the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord. International travelers should discuss the danger as well as prevention and treatment of this disease before departure.
