Syphilis Symptoms

By ememichael at 2010-08-25 06:57:02
Syphilis is an STD or sexually transmitted disease or STI or sexually transmitted infection. When syphilis is left untreated, it can develop into a late stage that can bring about more complications and health problems. There are two types of syphilis infection that could occur.

In Syphilis treatment, antibiotics are an efficient cure for the infection. The antibiotic of preference is penicillin; as the dosage and how it's administered, either into a muscle or into a vein, relies on the phase of syphilis.

Syphilis has three major stages and one latent or inactive stage. The first is the formation of an ulcer or chancre. Once infection has begun, the chancre typically develops after 21 days, though it may appear sooner (10-20 days) or later (22 to 90 days). If the chancre becomes evident, syphilis can get very, very contagious.

Symptoms of Syphilis:

Fever.

Enlarged lymph nodes in your groin.

Positive serology.

Extragenital chancres occur most commonly above the neck, typically affecting the lips or oral cavity.

Rash - Bilaterally symmetric.

Soreness and aching.

The most direct means of preventing a syphilis infection is to abstain from sexual intercourse. This is followed by being in a sexually monogamous relationship with a previously tested partner, and then by requiring all sexual partners to be tested for syphilis.

Syphilis, caused by the bacterium Treponema pallidum, is actually a sexually transmitted disease that may be transmitted in a number of ways. The first one is, obviously, via sexual intercourse. This includes vaginal, oral, and anal sex. Syphilis bacteria can wreak havoc on one's life as they bring about various symptoms that are very bothersome.

The cause of syphilis, which is the bacterium mentioned earlier, lurks around or can be found on the vagina, anus, rectum, or external genitals of the infected person. The sores associated with spreading the disease can occur in or around the mouth as well as on the lips of the infected person.

The final stage which is the late syphilis, can lead to blindness, heart disease, mental illness, and even death. Syphilis is treated with the antibiotic penicillin and is administered via injection. Other antibiotics can be used for patients allergic to penicillin.

Benzathine penicillin G, given intramuscularly in two sites, is effective therapy. For the adolescent who is sensitive to penicillin, either oral erythromycin or tetracycline can be given for 10 to 15 days. Sexual partners are treated in the same way as the person with the active infection.

Latent syphilis may continue five to twenty years with no symptoms, but the person is no longer infectious to other people. A pregnant woman can transmit the disease to her unborn child which is called a congenital syphilis. Late syphilis varies from no symptoms to indication of damage to body organs such as the brain, heart, and liver.

When the term 'Syphilis' is heard, one may think of a lot of terrible things. Truly, Syphilis is a disease that should be dreaded by all, and that once a person observes some signs of syphilis, turning a blind eye would only cause the worst.
