Back Pain Causes

By ememichael at 2010-07-12 06:46:10
Lower back pain is the most popular type of back pain, eight out of every ten people suffering back pain is a lower back pain. This excruciating pain originates from several sources too numerous to mention and it can affect anybody without age restrictions, it has been discovered though, that people between the ages of thirty to fifty are more prone to experiencing lower back pain.

Unknown to many people out there, simple low back pain is the most popular of the many types of back pain available. Statistics show that nineteen out of twenty people are affected by it. It is not associated with any other disease.

People over 60 years of age are grouped separately usually . They often have problems of arthritis and other degenerative conditions which can be the causes of back pain. A bump, bruise or an accident can be a cause of lower back pain.

It is also known as non-specific low back pain because it is not often diagnosed accurately or linked to any particular cause. In most cases, it is often mild and when it is severe, it is usually because of a lack of immediate and proper care on the part of the person grappling with it. When you back is bad getting out of bed and starting the day can be terrible. You start looking for lower back pain treatment. Chronic lower back pain causes misery to millions around the world and creates a huge economic drain on both personal and company resources.

Lower back pain is an epidemic condition affecting millions of patients worldwide. The medical industry is meeting this growing plague head on, but making very little progress when it comes to providing lasting relief for the majority of patients. Medical science turns its attention to developing mostly symptomatic treatment modalities when patients really need a cure for their pain. Objective study of the history of back pain, the typical diagnoses, the standard treatments and the statistical results paints a crystal clear picture of why most patients never truly recover from their debilitating symptoms.

This type of back pain stems from inadequacies related to the posture of an individual. Also, it can occur as a result of lifting heavy object wrongly. For instance, when you lift objects while your body is positioned at an awkward angle, it can lead to pain in the lower region of your back. Also, sitting improperly can also lead to simple low back pain.

One of the most common limitations of chronic back pain, depression affects everyone involved in the daily life of the sufferer. The type of depression experienced by sufferers of chronic back pain is not simply a matter of feeling sad or "down at the heels" for a day or so. "Major depression" and "clinical depression" are the terms used for this kind of depression.

A second of the chronic back pain limitations reported is that of social activity. People suffering chronic back pain become reluctant to attend parties and other social functions. They may curtail recreational activities or outings with the family.

The pain and incapacitation caused by a ruptured disc are well established. So is the frequency of the disorder: in a recent survey, nearly a quarter of the respondents (543 people) had been diagnosed with a ruptured disc. But concrete and accurate information about the best ruptured disc treatment has not been available, obscured as it has been by a storm of conflicting opinions and data.

Begin your day by getting out of bed with this exercise. Roll on one side. Gently swing your legs to the floor while pushing up with your arms. When you are in a sitting position, stand up. This exercise will remind you every morning of your desire to cure back pain forever.

Underneath these layers of the back muscles are the actual spine bones. They are very large and sturdy, except perhaps in the case of an elderly person with osteoporosis. There are five lumbar vertebrae, five sacral vertebrae (which are fused), and four coccyx vertebrae. They are held together with ligaments on the front, sides, and back. There are cushions between the lumbar vertebrae called discs which have gelatinous centers and fibrous outer sheaths. Sometimes the gelatinous center ruptures out through the fibrous sheet and this is commonly referred to as a "ruptured disc." The gelatinous material can impinge on a spinal nerve coming out of the spinal cord, and cause pain down the back of the leg. This is called "sciatica." Sometimes the disc can rupture inward and actually push on the spinal cord. This may cause bowel and bladder problems and other neurological symptoms.

The doctor examines you continually looking for clues. Is the pain localized to one of the muscles of the back or to its ligamentous attachments, or does it seem to be a deeper process? In looking for a deeper process, the examination often focuses on the legs. The doctor might look to see if there is muscle atrophy due to a nerve injury up around the spine. Are there precisely located areas where the skin is numb or has decreased sensitivity? Are the reflexes brisk and equal at the knees and ankles (looking for the same nerve injury indications)? Is there weakness in pushing down with the great toe (a sign of L5-S1 nerve impingement)?

The age of an individual, a disc that is ruptured, spinal degeneration, sciatica, heavy lifting etc. are one of the major sources of pains at the lower part of back. The important thing to note is that once any of these bring about a back pain, do not hesitate to treat the condition promptly to avoid complications. Do a search, investigate thoroughly to know the major sources of back pains and then you will be able to get a hold of the situation. This should be done whenever symptoms of back pain arises.

Most references to back pain focus on lower back pain in the lumbar spinal region. However, back pain causes in no particular order are:

1.Accidents or injuries leaving muscle pain

2. Osteoarthritis with deteriorating cartilage

3.Osteoporosis with bone loss / fracture

4. Fibromyalgia

5.Major conditions like cancer
