Bird flu or avian flu is an influenza virus type that normally infects birds. However, it can also infect other animals including pigs. Wild birds are natural hosts to the virus and normally don't get sick from it. But domestic animals such as chickens and turkeys could be severely affected. Humans, on the other hand, can be infected with influenza types A, B, and C.

But when it does infect human species then it is found to be deadly. The particularity of the avian influenza is that it has so far not caused infection among humans. And if this takes place then we are doomed, for a new strain would have developed and this can be quite dangerous.

Experts are saying that Avian Flu or Bird Flu could become Pandemic at some time in the future, and it could affect the human race. The World Health Organization has recognized that there could be a problem. Governments have been urged to update all their plans for counteracting any possibility of this happening.

First and foremost "avoid". In case there is a known case of influenza virus attack in a particular region the basics is to avoid contact with persons from that region. This is in itself a big tool. Take your annual flu shot. This reduces the chances of you being infected by the flu. Avoid contact with infected poultry and farm products.

Avian flu can be prevented by careful handling of birds. Avoid their droppings and saliva. You cannot get avian flu from eating well cooked poultry, as the heat kills the virus. Wash hands thoroughly after handling birds. Get an air purifier that will kill germs and bacteria on surfaces. People confuse air filters with an air purifier, an air filter does not disinfect surfaces. Find an air purifier with documented proof that it does kill germs and viruses in the air and on surfaces.
